We wanted to thank David Ramsey who sent us an email with this information. We liked it so much we wanted to share it with you. May all of you have a great Memorial Day weekend and please take a moment to say a prayer for our active troops.

10 Things You May Not Know About Memorial Day - Here are 10 facts about the last Monday in May.

10. Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day.

9. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868.

7. After World War I, people began to observe and honor those who were killed in all of America's wars.

6. The day was declared a national holiday by Congress in 1971.

5. The birthplace of Memorial Day is Waterloo, New York. The town first celebrated the day on May 5, 1866, by closing businesses, and residents decorated soldiers' graves with flowers.

Sears and Military

by Ruth 2. December 2010 04:56

We honor and respect our Military men and women on their commitment to keep us safe and safeguard our freedoms. So when we come across other companies that are of like mind we want to give them kudos for their efforts and suggest showing your support by purchasing something from them. We received an email on how Sears treats their employees who are called up for military duty. One of our employees was intrigued by the email and wanted to verify the information so she went to Sears website and sent them an email asking them to verify the information. Below is her email and below that is Sears reply. Thank You to Sears (including Overstock.com).

Sears,
I received an email about your company and how you handle Sears employees who are called up for military duty. Below is what was in the email. Is this true? If it is I want to Thank You and I also want to promote you amongst my co-workers and friends. I appreciate a business that stands by it's military people.

"Sears is voluntarily paying the difference in salaries and maintaining all benefits, including medical insurance and bonus programs, for all called up reservist employees for up to two years."

Best Regards,
Ruth

Dear Valued Customer,
Thank you for taking the time to let us know of your support for our actions regarding our associates who have been called into active duty.

As you may have read, Sears has extended its program of military pay differential to 60 months. This includes allowing Sears reservists who are full-time employees to continue participating in the company's life insurance, medical and dental programs, if they choose. The company will  also hold a comparable position for these individuals for up to five years.

If you would like more information regarding our military support programs, please visit:

Sears has a heritage of commitment to families and home. This is a difficult time for military families, and we are proud to be able to take these actions to demonstrate support for our many co-workers who are serving our Nation.

Sincerely,
Dylan C.Retail Customer Care
